In Microsoft InfoPath is a Windows - application of the company Microsoft , which both the design of XML -based forms allowed with information and their subsequent filling. The XML-based file format on which the InfoPath files are based pursues an approach comparable to the W3C standard XForms of mapping form fields and control elements to data instances in XML format. Starting with the “InfoPath 2010” version, InfoPath is part of the Microsoft Office Professional Plus suite.

history

InfoPath was introduced together with Microsoft Office 2003 and was previously developed under the code name XDocs . InfoPath was created as a reaction to the PDF forms introduced by Adobe , which should make the "paperless office" possible.

On January 31, 2014, Microsoft announced that InfoPath 2013 would be the final version of this software and that InfoPath would no longer be available in future versions of Microsoft Office.

application

The created forms can be distributed over a network so that user information can be collected and saved in a simple and user-friendly manner. InfoPath can be used in conjunction with Windows SharePoint Services to provide users with forms for typical situations such as status reports, travel expense reports, etc.

Since under InfoPath 2003 users are dependent on the paid software to design and fill out the forms, the target group was essentially limited to companies with homogeneous work environments. These should be enabled to integrate forms into workflows . Since the InfoPath 2007 version, it is also possible to place forms on the web in connection with Office SharePoint Server 2007 with the help of "Forms Services". These can then be filled out and sent on the client computer without InfoPath installation.

End of support

Microsoft Infopath 2013 official support will expire on July 14, 2026. Infopath is still supported in the SharePoint version 2016.

File format

InfoPath uses the XSN file extension. XSN is a CAB archive with XML, GIF, and JS or VBS files.
