Ingo Hofmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ingo Hofmann (* 1943 in Senftenberg ) is a German physicist .

Training and activities

Hofmann studied physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in theoretical plasma physics in 1972 at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching near Munich . He completed his habilitation in 1984 and is an adjunct professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From 1983 to 2013 Hofmann worked at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt , most recently as head of accelerator theory . From 1994 to 1998 he led (with G. Plass, CERN) the European HIDIF study on energy generation through inertial fusion using accelerators.

Hofmann is a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He was active in review committees of various large accelerators , for example at J-PARC and most recently in 2012 at the Chinese ADS accelerator, which is currently being planned. He has been chairman of the Beam Dynamics Panel at the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA) since 2019. From 1998 to 2013 Hofmann was a member and from 2008 to 2013 chairman of the Inertial Fusion Energy Working Group of EURATOM . Since 2013 he has been working in an advisory capacity at the Technical University of Darmstadt and at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research.

Hofmann has worked as a visiting researcher at major accelerator centers and universities in various countries, such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ( USA ), Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA), the Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA), CERN ( Switzerland ) and the University of Tokyo ( Japan ).

From 2005 to 2019 Hofmann was the human rights officer for the Bahá'í community in Germany and its spokesman for politics, non-governmental organizations and the media . His focus here was on religious freedom , especially in the Islamic Republic of Iran .

Services

Hofmann's pioneering work on collective instabilities and anisotropy effects was used in the design of modern large accelerator systems for high intensities such as spallation neutron sources (J-PARC / Japan, SNS / USA or ESS / Sweden ) or ADS accelerators for the transmutation of via the “Hofmann stability charts” nuclear waste .

Private

Hofmann is a father of four and a grandfather of three. He can converse in English , Italian , Persian and French .
