Ingolf Schanche

Ingolf Findregaard Schanche ( June 13, 1877 in Bergen - April 15, 1954 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian actor and theater manager . He spent most of his theater work at the Nationaltheatret in Oslo, but was also the first Artistic Director of the Det Nye Teater .

life and work

Schanche was the son of the captain Christian Fredrik Grøner Schanche (1847-1918) and Ida PM Larsen (1848-1896). He was a distant relative of Postmaster Jens Schanche and Herman Garmann Schanche.

He made his stage debut in 1897 in his hometown of Bergen, at the Den Nationale Scene theater , in Peter Egges' play Stridsmænd . He stayed at this theater for two seasons and then joined Ludovica Levy and Dore Lavik and their Sekondteatret in Oslo . A year later he moved to Centralteatret and then to Fahlstrøms Teater. In 1905 he was appointed to the Nationaltheatret and played at this house until 1928. He then worked as an actor and artistic director at the Det Nye Teater , which opened in 1929. From 1931 to 1942 he was engaged again at the Nationaltheatret.

During the 1920s he made several guest appearances on stages in other Scandinavian countries, in Helsinki , Stockholm and Copenhagen . He embodied both Count Danilo Danilowitsch in Lehár's Merry Widow and tragic roles such as Nikolas Arnesson, Bishop of Oslo, in Ibsen’s Crown Pretender or Gregers Werle in Ibsen’s Wild Duck . He also played the title role in Bjørnson's Paul Lange og Tora Parsberg and Fedja Protasow in Tolstoy's Living Corpse . The high point of his acting career was the title role in Shakespeare's Hamlet , which he first took on in 1920.

In July 1905 he married the actress Ragnhild Fredriksen (1882–1963).

Awards

Schanche was an honorary member of the Swedish Theater, Art and Media Union. He was awarded the Swedish Royal Wasa Order and in 1937 was made Knight First Class of the Norwegian Order of Saint Olav .
