Ingrid Newkirk (* 11. June 1949 in Surrey , UK ) is a British-American animal welfare - activist , co-founder and president of the international animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Life

Newkirk grew up in New Delhi and worked as deputy sheriff in Maryland ( USA ) and the District of Columbia in the 1970s . As part of her office, she was already involved in crimes against animal welfare. During this time, she says she was influenced by Peter Singer's book Animal Liberation . In 1980 she founded the group PETA together with the well-known activist Alex Pacheco .

Over the years Newkirk has had some successes against factory farming , animal experiments , animal cruelty, etc. She has also published several books on the subject. Newkirk is heavily criticized, u. a. because of their positive attitude towards the violent Animal Liberation Front . In addition, some of Newkirk's interview statements caused outrage. In a letter she asked Yasser Arafat not to send animals to Israel as live bombs; When asked why she had not asked to stop the attacks, she replied that it was not her job to interfere in human wars. Newkirk publicly advocated equating animals and humans: “There is no rational basis for claiming that humans have special rights. A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. They are all animals. ”In addition to her work for PETA, Newkirk is a director of the PETA Foundation and a board member of Earthsave International and United Poultry Concerns .

In her will , Newkirk states that she wants to donate her corpse to PETA and suggests, among other things, that parts of it should be grilled, her skin should be made into leather and her feet should be made into umbrella stands and that her liver should be in France as part of a protest against Foie gras should be used.
