At the age of one, her family moved from Oberlaab near Wels to Bad Ischl . Rumpfhuber attended elementary school and high school there. After the fourth grade, she switched to the Stams ski school in order to concentrate fully on ski racing. She started doing this at the age of seven, when a trainer from ASKÖ Gosau noticed her. Then she drove for the WSV Bad Ischl.
Rumpfhuber contested her first FIS race in November 1996, the first victory followed on December 11, 1997 at the giant slalom in Bad Hofgastein . She celebrated her first major successes on an international level in 1997 when she won the silver medal at the Junior Olympics in Sundsvall and at the Junior World Championships in 2000 with the silver medal in the Super-G. She started in the European Cup in January 1999 and won three races. In the World Cup it was the first time in February 2001 at the start. She achieved a place in the top ten four times (always in the downhill), the best place was a sixth place in Åre on February 2, 2002.
Ingrid Rumpfhuber suffered several serious injuries in her career: On January 18, 2003, she had a serious fall on the descent from Cortina d'Ampezzo and suffered ligament strains in her right knee and an impression fracture on the head of the tibia. A year later, she had an even harder fall: on January 29, 2004, during the final training for the World Cup downhill in Haus im Ennstal , she jumped on her back and suffered an open fracture of the tibia and fibula. Due to the strong competition within the team, she could never qualify for World Championships or Olympic Games. After the 2008/09 season, she ended her active sports career.
