Inline hockey in Namibia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inline hockey is one of the growing sports in Namibia and is particularly popular among German-Namibians .

history

The entire sport of inline hockey in Namibia has only developed since 1995 when Swakopmund Danie Holloway returned from the USA with a pair of inline skates . He came across exciting and interested faces when he showed his friends Knolles Green, Russell Vinjevoldt and Tina Green these inline skates. Since there were no inline skates on the Namibian market, the Swakopmund friends looked around for a supplier in South Africa and found one. You soon noticed the versatility of these skates and so, among other things, broom sticks were used as hockey sticks. Knolles Green and Russell Vinjevoldt tried to find out more about inline hockey and immediately put the theory into practice. The street corner at the Greens House was increasingly flooded with inline hockey enthusiasts. The popularity of this sport grew until the first inline hockey club in Namibia was founded in Swakopmund with the Coastal Pirates . In 1996, the Namibia Inline Skating Association (NISA) was founded as the umbrella organization for inline hockey in Namibia. It was renamed the Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA) in 2005.

societies

There are currently five clubs in Namibia that are organized under the umbrella of the Namibia Ice and InLine Hockey Association (NIIHA). With around 120 members, the Coastal Pirates are the largest association. There are also a few other clubs that operate the sport semi-professionally .
