The Institute for History and Biography is a scientific institution of the Faculty for Cultural and Social Sciences at the FernUniversität in Hagen . The institute was founded in 1993. Until 2007 it was located in a building in Lüdenscheid , which also housed a study center of the distance university, and was then moved to the campus of the distance university in Hagen .

tasks

The Institute for History and Biography of the FernUniversität Hagen conducts biographical research projects using the oral history method , produces scientific films, operates the “German Memory” archive for subjective testimonies and organizes the “Lüdenscheider Talks” series of events.

The institute is the seat of the editorial office of BIOS , the “Journal for Biography Research , Oral History and Life Course Analysis” and the secretariat of the International Oral History Association .

The work of the institute deals with the subjects in history and with the question of how people experienced and experienced history, how historical experiences were processed and what significance earlier experiences had for later phases in life history. Changes in biographical constructions, developments of consensus and dissent elements in a society as well as processing of political breaks are examined.

The institute organizes conferences, seminars and excursions. The "Lüdenscheider Talks", which usually take place monthly, are particularly well known. In addition, research projects are supervised and carried out.

The Institute for History and Biography was founded by Alexander von Plato in 1993 and headed by him until 2007. Peter Brandt followed him .

Today, the directorate of the institute includes Arthur Schlegelmilch as managing director, Frank Hillebrandt , Alexandra Przyrembel , Thomas Bedorf , Wolfgang Kruse (all from Hagen) as well as three representatives of the scientific and non-scientific staff and students.

The board of trustees includes Alexander von Plato (Stade) as chairman, Stefan Berger ( Ruhr-Universität Bochum ), Peter Brandt (FernUniversität in Hagen, Berlin), Ewald Grothe ( Archiv des Liberalismus Gummersbach / Bergische Universität Wuppertal ), Gabriele Rosenthal ( Georg-August -University of Göttingen ), Miriam Rürup ( University of Hamburg ), Thomas Ruschin (Lüdenscheid), Brigitta Schmidt-Lauber ( University of Vienna ), Ulrich Schödlbauer (Berlin) and Dorothee Wierling (University of Hamburg, Berlin).

Research assistant and director of the “German Memory” archive is Almut Leh .
