The Institute for International and Foreign Private Law of the University of Cologne is a scientific institution of the University of Cologne that conducts research and teaching in the field of foreign and international private and procedural law as well as comparative law . It is currently headed by Heinz-Peter Mansel and publishes, in particular, the series IPG - Expert Opinions on International and Foreign Private Law , in which foreign law court opinions from German university and Max Planck institutes are published. The institute also houses the editorial staff of the journal Praxis des Internationale Privat- und procedural law (IPRax) .

history

The institute emerged in 1950 from the international law department of the Institute for Labor and Business Law ; Gerhard Kegel was appointed its first director on May 1, 1950. In 1971 Alexander Lüderitz became co-director, then in 1978 sole director of the institute, before management was transferred to Heinz-Peter Mansel in 1999. Since 1970 the institute has been in the “Rechtshaus” of Cologne University in Gottfried-Keller-Str. 2, which was built on the initiative of Gerhard Kegel and his colleague Bodo Börner for the university's international law institutes.

From 2000 to 2009, the academic editing of the yearbook for Italian law was located at the institute, which is now based at the chair for civil law, international private and procedural law and comparative law at the University of Konstanz .

Research priorities

The focus of the institute's work is on international private and procedural law as well as comparative law. In addition, there are questions of foreign and European private law, which are also the subject of the expertise of the Institute for Courts, primarily in North Rhine-Westphalia . Comparative law focuses on Anglo-American law , the law of the Benelux countries, France, Italy and Turkey as well as legal systems based on Islamic law.

In addition to numerous courses, the institute supports the lecturer exchange with the University of California, Berkeley , founded by Gerhard Kegel , as well as the German-Turkish courses (with the Universities of Bilgi and Kemerburgaz ) and the German-Italian course (with the University of Florence ) at the university Cologne looks after.

Library

The institute's library has around 92,000 works and 240 regularly updated periodicals. It is part of the common library of the law house of the University of Cologne; This also offers access to extensive collections of international and European law as well as to literature from the field of international criminal law . As a reference library, it provides its users with 62 workstations and access to numerous legal databases.
