history

The institute has its roots in the seminar for commercial and industrial law founded by Heinrich Lehmann, the second rector of the University of Cologne, after the end of the First World War. After several extensions in 1929, this was renamed the Institute for Labor Law, Commercial Law and Foreign Law. The commercial law department was headed by Heinrich Lehmann, the labor law department was headed by Hans Carl Nipperdey and the international law department by Hans Planitz. In 1950 the international law department was spun off and formed the basis for a new institute for international and foreign private law at the University of Cologne. Hans Carl Nipperdey, President of the Federal Labor Court from 1954 to 1963, had already taken over the management of the labor law and commercial law departments after the Second World War and became director of the institute, whose name changed to the Institute for Labor and Commercial Law. His successors as managing directors were Wolfgang Zöllner from 1967 to 1969 and Herbert Wiedemann from 1969 to 1998. In addition to Herbert Wiedemann, Peter Hanau and Manfred Lieb were directors of the institute. Martin Henssler has been managing director since 1998 , Barbara Dauner-Lieb and Ulrich Preis are co-directors. The managing director of the institute, Martin Henssler, was elected President of the German Lawyers' Association in 2006.
