International Rhineland-Palatinate Tour 1966
The International Rhineland-Palatinate Tour 1966 was an international cycling - stage race over five stages through the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . The Rhineland-Palatinate Tour took place from June 20 to 24, starting in St. Goar and ending in Mainz. The organization was carried out by the Association for the Promotion of German Cycling. V. It was the first time the tour was held.
Attendees
Teams from Denmark , the Netherlands , England , Switzerland , Luxembourg , Spain and a selection from the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) took part. Other teams came from the regional associations (LV) of the BDR.
route
The tour led over 858 kilometers from St. Goar via Marienberg, Bitburg, Kusel, Oppenheim to Mainz. The 5th stage was divided into two half-stages.
Race course
The winner of the first stage was Eddie Beugels from the Netherlands after a successful breakaway attempt, who reached the goal two minutes ahead of the peloton. Burkhard Ebert, who started for the BDR selection, won the second stage with a lead of almost two minutes over a group with the eventual overall winner Ortwin Czarnowski. Erwin Derlick and Martin Gombert, who are among the favorites, have already lost eight minutes on this stage. With the victory, Ebert also won the leadership jersey.
However, Ebert lost more than five minutes on the 3rd stage to the winner Dieter Leitner and Czarnowski, for whom 5th place was enough to take over the jersey of the front runner.
On the 4th stage , Derlick began a solo escape after just 20 kilometers, which he successfully brought to an end when he reached the stage goal with a small margin. The overall ranking did not change.
The 1st half stage (a time trial ) of the 5th stage was won by Richard Adler, the 2nd half stage was secured by Czarnowski, who received a time credit of 30 seconds, which secured him the overall victory.
