Iogannes Gugowitsch Weltmander

Iogannes Gugowitsch Weltmander ( Russian Иоганнес Гугович Вельтмандер ; born October 13, 1921 in Jamburg ; † October 7, 2014 ) was a Russian chess player and coach.

Life

Weltmander learned to play chess at the age of eight. At first he played with his parents, and then he was trained in a Leningrad chess club. He then lived in Sarapul before studying at the Kazan Technical College for Finance and Economics. In 1940 he finished fifth in the Kazan City Championship , becoming a player in the first category. After completing his studies in 1942, he returned to Sarapul and worked in a factory during the war. Weltmander had been working as a sports instructor in Izhevsk since 1949 .

He took part in several individual championships of the RSFSR : In 1946 he shared the 5th – 6th. Place, 1952 and 1953 the 5th-7th Space. In a semi-final of the Soviet championship in Tartu in 1950 , he shared the 2nd – 4th. Place with Vladas Mikėnas and Alexander Konstantinopolski . Weltmander did not make it into the final only because of the poorer ranking. He also drew attention to himself as a strong team player in the 1950s. With the Russian selection, he took part in the Soviet team championships in 1951 in Tbilisi and 1953 in Leningrad , he won in 1951 and in 1953 came second. He played with Iskra in 1952 and 1954 in the Team Cup of Sports Associations of the USSR and won the competition in 1952. Since 1953 he was the first player in the Udmurt Republic to be the Master of Sports of the USSR . He also played correspondence chess . At the III. Soviet championship 1955-57 he landed in shared sixth place behind Konstantinopolski.

Weltmander was active as a youth coach in Izhevsk for a long time. One of his students was GM Maxim Sorokin , who became a candidate for a master's degree under his supervision. In the 1960s he coached the Russian selection and was awarded the honorary title of Honored Trainer of the RSFSR for his achievements in 1964 . As chairman of the Republican Chess Federation, he contributed to the development of chess in Udmurtia. Since 1953 he maintained the chess column in the newspaper Udmurtskaya Pravda and in 1988 became a member of the Russian Association of Journalists.

With his highest historical rating of 2553 he was in April 1951 at number 80 in the world rankings.
