Ipanema , officially Portuguese Município de Ipanema , is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais ( Região Sudeste ). In 2010, 18,170 people lived in an area of 459 km². As of July 1, 2016, the population was estimated at 19,603 inhabitants, called Ipanemens. The distance to the capital Belo Horizonte is around 350 km.
history
The territory of the present-day city was the original settlement area of the Botocuds (Aimorés) in Minas Gerais. After agriculture and cattle breeding began in the middle of the 19th century, a small settlement called Rio José Pedro had formed. The first chapel was built in 1873. The area was initially under Caratinga , then from March 11, 1891 Manhuaçu (Manhuassu). The Vila do Rio José Pedro was spun off to the self-governing Município do Rio José Pedro and from Manhuaçu on August 30, 1911 , after the necessary elections to the organs came into force on September 7, 1912. The place underwent several administrative changes, in 1923 it became Rio José Pedro was renamed Município de José Pedro and was given the current name Ipanema on September 20, 1928.
The city is located in the Aimorés microregion and Vale do Rio Doce mesoregion . It borders the communities of Conceição de Ipanema , Caratinga , Pocrane , Taparuba , Simonésia and Inhapim .
