Ipomoea costellata is a plant type from the genus of Morningglory ( Ipomoea ) from the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). The species is common in Central and North America .

description

Ipomoea costellata is an upright or ascending annual plant , larger specimens can also grow in twists . They are sparsely fine-haired or almost hairless. The small foliage leaves have short petioles , the leaf blade covered with fine line bristles is divided almost to the base into several linear, entire or lobed segments of up to 1.5 cm in length.

The inflorescence stalks are thread-like, longer than the leaves and have a single flower . The sepals are about 4 mm long, linear-elongated or lanceolate-elongated, pointed, hairless and almost membranous. The crown has a length of 12 mm, it is hairless, the coronet is purple, the corolla tube is white.

The fruit is an almost spherical capsule with a length of 6 mm. The seeds are hairless.

distribution

The species is widespread in Guatemala and Mexico , as well as in the southwest of the USA and grows there on shrubby plains or limestone slopes at altitudes between 250 and 1500 m.

Systematics

Within the genus of morning glory ( Ipomoea ), the species is classified in the section Leptocallis in the subgenus Quamoclit .

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Ipomoea costellata var. Costellata : It occurs from Arizona to Texas and Guatemala.
  • Ipomoea costellata var. Edwardsensis O'Kennon & GLNesom : It occurs only in Travis County, Texas.
