Irene Sänger-Bredt (born April 24, 1911 in Bonn as Irene Reinhild Agnes Elisabeth Bredt , † October 20, 1983 in Stuttgart ) was a German mathematician and physicist . Together with her future husband Eugen Sänger , she developed the first concept of a space glider in the study on rocket propulsion for long-range bombers from 1944. The concept led to the Silbervogel project with the intention of building a transcontinental American bomber .

Life

Irene Bredt did her doctorate in 1936 on "the X-ray spectra of rare earths". She began her research work as Eugen Sanger's assistant at the Trauen rocket test site. Her field of work was the processing of thermodynamic and gas-kinetic problems on liquid rockets . In 1941 she took over the management of the institute's physics department. In 1942 she became Eugen Sanger's first assistant at the German Research Institute for Glider Flight with the supervision and evaluation of ramjet towing tests.

From 1945 she worked in research and as a consultant at the Arsenal de l'Aéronautique , Paris-Chàtillon, and as a freelance consulting engineer at Matra , Paris-Billancourt and at the Institute of Technology in Madras , India. After her marriage to Eugen Sänger and the birth of her son, she returned to Germany in 1954. There she became deputy head of the Research Institute for the Physics of Jet Propulsion, which Eugen Sänger founded as the first European space research institute in Stuttgart.

From 1963 Irene Sänger-Bredt worked as a consulting engineer on space issues for the Junkers and Bölkow companies , which later became Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH. In 1960 she was the only female founding member of the International Astronautical Academy and published over 83 manuscripts and books on scientific and cultural topics until her death on October 20, 1983 in Stuttgart.
