The Irene SL is an oil tanker owned by the Enesel shipping company from Athens and sails under the Greek flag.

history

The ship was a 2004 Irene on behalf of the London shipping company NS Lemos & Company for the Cypriot company Melteme Shipping on the shipyard built Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. The keel-laying of the double-hulled ship under the construction number S203 took place on May 1st, the launch on July 19th, 2004. The completion as Irene SL took place on October 11, 2004 for the shipping company Enesel.

On February 9, 2011, the tanker was en route from Kuwait to the USA with a cargo of 270,000 tons of crude oil worth about 200 million US dollars and a crew of 25, seven Greeks, one Georgian and 17 Filipinos on board 350 nautical miles east of Muscat captured by Somali pirates .

The pirates released the ship from their power on April 8, 2011. The shipping company refused to provide any information as to whether a ransom had been paid. The ship continued its voyage to the port of Durban in South Africa. A pirate from Lebed, a village on the Indian Ocean coast near Hobyo , told Thomson Reuters on the phone that the pirates had received $ 13.5 million in ransom for the ship .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by a six-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo driven type 6S90MC-C Mk5. The engine with an output of 29348  kW acts on a propeller.

The ship has 15 cargo tanks with a total capacity of 339,052 m³. The tanks can be loaded and unloaded using three manifolds . There are three pumps with a maximum capacity of 15,000 t / hour. to disposal.
