Irondale is a city in Jefferson County in the US state of Alabama . It is a suburb of Birmingham and has a population of almost 10,000.
Irondale is by the book and film of the same name Green Tomatoes (Engl. Fried Green Tomatoes) by Fannie Flagg become known. Fannie Flagg grew up in Irondale. The location of the book and film was the famous Irondale Cafe, which was called "The Whistle Stop Cafe". Irondale is the seat of the internationally operating Catholic radio and television station EWTN , the world's largest religious television station.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, Irondale has 9,813 people in 4,019 households and 2,736 families. Racially, the population is made up of 72 percent white population, 25 percent African American and smaller minorities. The percentage of Hispanics in the total population is three percent.
