Isaías Duarte Cancino

Isaías Duarte Cancino (born February 15, 1939 in San Gil , Santander District , Colombia ; † March 16, 2002 in Aquablanca / Cali , Colombia) was a Colombian priest and archbishop . He was murdered for fighting the drug mafia and guerrilla groups .

Life

Isaías Duarte Cancino was born in San Gil in 1939. He spent his school days in Bucaramanga . He attended the seminary in Pamplona ( Spain ) and studied theology in Rome . After being ordained a priest in 1963, he worked in Bucaramanga.

After his episcopal ordination by Archbishop Héctor Rueda Hernández , he was auxiliary bishop in Bucaramanga from 1985 to 1988 and titular bishop of Germania in Numidia and from 1988 to 1995 bishop of Apartadó .

From 1995 until his death he then worked as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cali . In his capacity as bishop he criticized the drug mafia and the two large guerrilla groups FARC and ELN . This earned him many enemies.

The archbishop was shot dead by two young men after several weddings with more than 100 people in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Aquablanca, near Cali.
