Sir Isaac Bayley Balfour (born March 31, 1853 in Edinburgh , † November 30, 1922 in Court Hill, Haslemere , Surrey ) was a Scottish, British colonial administrator and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Balf.f. "

Life

Balfour was the son of the botanist John Hutton Balfour , attended the Edinburgh Academy and studied at the University of Edinburgh with the degree in 1873. He then attended the universities of Würzburg and Strasbourg. He used an astronomical expedition to observe the passage of Venus in 1874 on the island of Rodrigues to study the local flora, on which he received his doctorate after his return in Edinburgh in 1875. He was then a lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College in Edinburgh until 1878 . At the same time he studied medicine in Edinburgh with a bachelor's degree (MB) in 1877 and a doctorate (MD) in 1883. In 1879 he was succeeded by Alexander Dickson Regius professor of botany at theUniversity of Glasgow . Alexander Dickson (1836-1887) took over the chair from Balfour's father, the Regius Professorship of Botany in Edinburgh.

In 1880 he led an expedition to Socotra and studied the flora there (published as Botany of Socotra 1888). In 1884 he became Sherardian Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford and married in the same year. In 1888 he took over the chair of botany in Edinburgh, which his father had held. In Edinburgh he reformed the Botanical Garden as Regius Keeper, among other things with the creation of an arboretum and set up a Botanical Institute. He was Queen's Botanist of Scotland.

He was President of the Edinburgh Botanical Society from 1880 to 1882 and 1904 to 1906. In 1920 he was ennobled (KBE). In 1919 he received the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London and in 1897 the Victoria Medal of Honor of the Royal Horticultural Society. He received honorary doctorates in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

Honors

In honor of Isaac Bayley Balfour, the genera Balfouria (H.Ohba) H.Ohba from the thick-leaf family (Crassulaceae) and Balfourina Kuntze from the red family (Rubiaceae) were named. A Socotra tarantula , the Yemen blue tarantula , discovered by Balfour, bears the dedication name balfouri ( Monocentropus balfouri ).
