Isaac de La Peyrère (* 1596 in Bordeaux , † January 30, 1676 in Aubervilliers ) was a French diplomat .

His parents were wealthy Huguenots with a Marran background. In 1640 he entered the service of the Prince of Condé in Paris . He became a member of the philosophical circle " Libertinage érudit", which also included Pierre Gassendi , François de La Mothe le Vayer , Claudius Salmasius and Gabriel Naudé . He developed a pre-Adamite hypothesis according to which there were two creations, first that of the Gentiles and then that of Adam as the progenitor of the Jews. Cardinal Richelieu, however, prejudiced this hypothesis .

In 1643 La Peyrère published his messianic ideas in Du Rappel des Juifs . In the following years, as part of his diplomatic activities, he met Queen Christina of Sweden and the Danish scientist Ole Worm . The Relation de l'Islande (1644) and the Relation du Groenland (1647) were created. The question of the origin of the Indians and newly discovered chronologies spoke in favor of his pre-Adamite hypothesis. Christina persuaded him to publish in Holland. The Praeadamitae and the Systema Theologicum appeared in Amsterdam in 1655. On November 26, 1655, the books were banned. In February 1656, La Peyrère was imprisoned in Brussels and advised to repudiate and convert. On March 11, 1657 he swore in Rome before Pope Alexander VII . In 1658 he justified his conversion to Catholicism in the Lettre de la Peyrère à Philotime .
