Maria Isabel Coelho Santos , mostly just Isabel Santos (born February 12, 1968 in Valbom , Gondomar ) is a Portuguese politician ( PS ). Santos was a member of the Portuguese Parliament for three legislatures (2005–2009, 2011–2015 and 2015–2019) and has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2019 European elections . The main focus of her work is in the field of foreign policy.

Life

education

Isabel Santos was born on February 12, 1968 in the small town of Valbom in Gondomar County. After completing school, she studied international relations and completed a postgraduate degree in sociology. She then moved to the city administration of the Porto suburb of Matosinhos , where she initially worked in the mayor's office. She later headed the administration's personnel department.

Entry into Portuguese politics

In the early 2000s, Santos joined the Socialist Party , of which she was temporarily deputy general secretary. In the Portuguese parliamentary elections in 2005 , she won a mandate for the PS in the constituency of Porto. In the 10th legislature she was a member of the committees for labor / social affairs, economy and health. From 2009 to 2011 Santos held the position of Government Representative ( Governadora Civil ) in the district of Porto. She was also a councilor for Gondomar from 2009 to 2013.

In the early parliamentary elections in 2011 , she ran again in the constituency of Porto and won a mandate. In the XII. In the legislature she was a member of the budget / finance, agriculture / marine and labor / social committees.

In the parliamentary elections in 2015 , they also defended their mandate. In the XIII. In the legislature, Santos was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities, as well as the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs. In the legislature, in addition to her parliamentary function, she was also a seconded member of the Portuguese Parliament in the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE . There she was Vice-President of the Assembly from 2016 to 2019 and headed the Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs. As chair of the committee, she also led OSCE election observation missions, including the 2017 federal elections and the 2018 US midterm elections .

Change to the European Parliament

For the 2019 European elections , the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) nominated Santos for eighth place on the list. In the election, the socialists won 9 of the 21 Portuguese mandates with 33.4 percent, so that Santos entered the European Parliament directly. Like the other PS candidates, she joined the S&D parliamentary group . For the group, Santos is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights , and she is an alternate member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .
