history

St. George's University was founded on July 23, 1976 by a resolution of the Grenada Parliament . The name refers to the capital of Grenada. The founders were Charles Modica , Louis Modica , Edward McGowan and Patrick F. Adams . The first courses at St. George's School of Medicine began on January 17, 1977. The majority of the founding members had received their own education in the United States or Europe.

A Marxist military coup in 1979 swept away the democratically elected government of Eric Gairy . At that time the school only had 630 students. During this time there were almost 1,000 Americans on the island (including students, university employees, their families, etc.). The US government under Ronald Reagan then launched Operation Urgent Fury in October 1983 . Students were evacuated and the courses of Long Iceland ( New York ), New Jersey and Barbados laid. It was not until 1984 that teaching was resumed in Grenada.

The US administration justified the invasion with a duty to rescue American medical students at St. George's University and with the aim of bringing the country back to democracy after Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was overthrown. Bishop, some members of his government, and several dozen civilians had been killed in the coup, and the island had been placed under a 24-hour curfew. During the days immediately after the coup, was the only independent information out of the country came from a radio amateur (ham radio), a student of St. George's.

In his memoir, President Reagan reports that the return of the students to the United States was an event that touched him deeply. “I was one of the many in our country whose eyes got a little moist when I saw their arrival in the United States on television and saw some of them bow and kiss the American ground the moment they did got off the plane that had brought them home. "

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan 2004, students were again temporarily relocated to campuses in the United States. The school now has a comprehensive hurricane plan.

In August 2014, SGU received a $ 750 million grant from Baring Private Equity Asia and Altas Partners , a Canadian private equity company whose other main stake is a salt mine. In August 2015, G. Richard Olds , the founder and former Dean of the UC Riverside School of Medicine, was named President and CEO of the school. In 2017 Andrew Sussman , the former Executive Vice President of Clinical Services at CVS Health, was named CEO.

campus

St. George's University has 65 buildings on 42 acres of land on a peninsula in the southwest corner of Grenada. A major expansion of the campus in the early 1990s resulted in the construction of 52 new buildings. The buildings are in the Georgian style . The campus also has a beautiful black sand beach ( Mandem Beach ) to the west .

Faculties

St. George's University School of Medicine is the university's medical school . It offers a Doctor of Medicine degree, which can be obtained individually or in combination with a Master of Public Health , Master of Business Administration , Master of Science , or Bachelor of Science . The school's mission is to “provide an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for further education in the health care professions, while at the same time providing compassion, curiosity, tolerance and commitment to patients and Society, as well as devotion to lifelong learning and understanding of the vital role of research in health care. "

The faculty has over 5,500 students, and because of its size, more doctors have been placed in the first-year US residency positions than any other university in the world. The The Princeton Review lists it as one of the "Best 168 Medical Schools".

The New York Times describes St. George's University School of Medicine as a "second chance medical school" because of the easier admission requirements than universities in the United States because many students turn to it after studying in US American schools could not obtain an entry permit. However, only 65% of students who enrolled in 2009 achieved a degree after 4 years, and another 20% graduated after 5 years. Unlike traditional US medical schools, St. George's pays money to hospitals to provide internships for students.

As part of the international orientation, students can complete internships in both the Keith B. Taylor Scholars Program Pathway and the traditional curriculum in Prague , Thailand , India , Honduras , Kenya and Sweden , as well as third and fourth years of university in the United States, Great Britain or Canada continue.

Tuition fees are more than $ 250,000.
