Iskar ( Bulgarian Искър ; in ancient Greek  Οἶσκος Oiskos , also Ὄσκιος Oskios or Σκίος Skios , Latin Oescus ) is the second longest river in Bulgaria and a right-hand tributary of the Danube . It flows through western Bulgaria and, in its last section, crosses the historical landscape of Moesia . It has a length of 368 km and drains an area of 8,650 km².

The source of the Iskar is Lake Tschamowsko ( Чамовско езеро ) on the northern slope of the Rila Mountains - at an altitude of 2500  m . This original river is called the Right Iskar ( Прав Искър ) - it flows into the Black Iskar ( Черни Искър ). The actual river arises from the confluence of the Black Iskar ( Черни Искър ), Left Iskar ( Леви Искър ) and White Iskar ( Бели Искър ) rivers - all still in the Rila Mountains. The Iskar is dammed by the Iskar Reservoir , which is 30 km southeast of Sofia.

Then it flows close to Sofia and crosses the Sofia plain and the Balkan mountains in a narrow gorge from south to north. It is the only river that completely crosses the Balkan Mountains.

The Iskar flows near the village Gigen (Гиген) and near the former Roman fort Oescus (named after the then lat. Name of the river Oescus ) into the Danube .

The Thracians already called him Oescus . The Serdian tribe settled on its banks .
