The Isla Margarita , also Isla Mompox called, is a Colombian river island in the Magdalena River . It is located in the Departamento de Bolívar , on the border with the Departamento del Magdalena in northern Colombia. With an area between 2100 and 2200 km² it is the largest island in Colombia and the fourth largest river island on earth, after Marajó , Bananal and Tupinambarana (all in Brazil). In 2008 it had 117,210 inhabitants.

Isla Margarita is located in the Depresión Momposina sedimentary basin . It is about 40 km wide and 90 km long and has an approximately rectangular shape; its area is approx. 2100 km², but changes with the tides. The island lies at the confluence of the Río Cauca with the Rio Magdalena , between this and its arm of the river Brazo De Mompos . Its highest point is at 20 m . There are some larger swamps on Isla Margarita, such as Ciénaga Bochica , Ciénaga Pajaral , Ciénaga De Lona , Ciénaga El Medio , Ciénaga Ancon , Ciénaga Florida , Ciénaga Grande , Ciénaga Robles , Ciénaga El Uvero , Ciénaga El Cacao , Ciénaga El Cucharal , Ciénaga El Palmar or Ciénaga Gualamito . There are other river islands nearby.

The Isla Margarita is divided into six municipalities: Mompós ( Santa Cruz de Mompox ), with more than a third of the area and three seventh of the population the economic center of the island, Cicuco , Hatillo de Loba , Margarita , San Fernando and Talaigua Nuevo , the together form the Depresión Momposina Bolivarense , a sub-region of the department. In 2008 the island had about 117,000 inhabitants. Other localities include Patico , Guasimal , Santa Rosa , Pinillos and La Victoria . On the mainland on the north bank is Magangué , the main financial center in Bolívar. To the east, where the Brazo De Mompós branches off from the Río Magdalena, is El Banco . Directly northeast of the island is the Department del Magdalena , in the west the Department de Sucre (5 km away) and in the east the Department del Cesar , 10 kilometers away.
