Samal Island or more precisely the Island Garden City of Samal is an island with city rights in the Philippines . The name is often abbreviated to IGaCoS .
The island with city rights belongs to the Davao del Norte province and is located in the Gulf of Davao in the southeast of Mindanao Island .
Mangroves that have been under nature conservation for several years are being planted in many parts of the coast. This secures new spawning grounds for the fish, gives birds new breeding areas and helps to strengthen coastal protection.

The Island Garden City of Samal consists of a group of 9 islands in the Gulf of Davao . It is located a few kilometers east of Davao City . The largest of the islands in its urban area is called Samal Island, the second largest is Talikud Island.
The area is 12 km wide and 30 km long and has numerous beach resorts along its 118 km long coastline.
The Puting Bato is the highest point on the island with a height of 411.2 m above sea level.
The total area of the urban area covers 301.3 km².
Culture and language
The dialects Cebuano (Visayan), Tagalog and Samar are represented in the urban area .
In addition to immigrants from Luzon and the Visayas , the native Samar people live here and there is a significant Muslim population.
economy
There are some indigenous industries on the island, such as furniture and household goods factories. There are also many companies that specialize in the manufacture of toys and souvenir items.
In addition to fishing, agriculture is also represented in the city.
However, the main economic factor is tourism. In addition to more than 60 beach resorts, the best known and most worth seeing is the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, there are a number of other attractions: bat caves, dolphin sightings, mountain tours and mountain biking, diving etc.
With its numerous coral reefs, the island city is also a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

history
On July 8, 1948, Samal was raised to the status of a parish by Executive Order No. 151, signed by President Elpidio Quirino . Later the island split into three independent parishes: Samal, Babak & Kaputian.
Samal was finally named a city by Republic Act No. 8472 in 1998. With this appointment, the three administrative communities of Samal, Babak and Kaputian were again combined into a single administrative unit. The law came into effect on March 7, 1998, when the residents were ratified.
The official name has since been "Island Garden City of Samal".
