The Isle à Quatre is an uninhabited island in the Grenadines archipelago in the island state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . It is located off the south coast of Petite Nevis and south of Bequia .

geography

The island is just over 2 km south of Bequia. It forms a curved ridge that curves from northeast to southwest. In the north is therefore the Bednoe Bay with its branch of the small Dicks Bay . On the east and south sides, however, the island is clearly divided into four headlands, which protrude from the ridge to the east and south-east into the sea and form four large bays: Soldier Bay , Grand Bay , Mahault Bay and Lagoon Bay . The width of the island fluctuates accordingly between 250 m and 975 m. The island is 376 acres (1.52 km²) and the terrain is largely steep, with beaches in Grand Bay, Mahaut Bay and Lagoon Bay, but larger reefs and reefs in Grand Bay and Lagoon Bay in Grand Bay, an elevation in small rock islets, including Black Rock ( ), continues into the sea. The island is uninhabited. James Mitchell's grandfather's old farmhouse still stands between the two peaks in the center of the island . The island has previously belonged to the family, but is for sale.

The northeasternmost point is at the end of the northernmost headland: , the westernmost point is West End ( ). Before the south end there is the rock Bellins Rock ( ). The island chain of Leeward Islands ( Lesser Antilles ) continues to the southwest with Pigeon Island and in the south with Canouan . About 8 km away, in the southeast is the popular island of Mustique .

history

The island belonged to France with the other islands in the region until the Seven Years War . In 1763 they were ceded to England. For over a hundred years the island has been owned by the Mitchell family, who were captains in the past and who will keep part of the island for themselves in the future. "White Cedar" ( Tabebuia heterophylla ), which were used for shipbuilding, used to grow on the island .
