Sir James Fitz-Allen Mitchell (born May 15, 1931 in Bequia ) is a politician from St. Vincent and the Grenadines .

biography

Mitchell, a cousin of three-time Prime Minister of St. Lucia Sir John George Melvin Compton , was first elected a Member of Parliament in 1966 . Between 1967 and 1972 he was Minister for Trade, Agriculture, Tourism and Labor in the government of Chief Minister Robert Milton Cato .

After the St. Vincent Labor Party (SVLP) Catos lost the elections to a party alliance led by Mitchell in April 1972, Mitchell became prime minister himself . In December 1974, however, the SVLP succeeded in the early elections against Mitchell, so that on December 8, 1974, Cato replaced him as prime minister.

In 1975 Mitchell became chairman of the New Democratic Party (NDP), which he led to victory in the 1984 elections. The NDP won 9 of the 13 seats in the legislative assembly, so that Mitchell on July 30, 1984 again succeeded Cato as Prime Minister. He also succeeded in winning the following parliamentary elections. After his fourth re-election in a row on June 15, 1998, he resigned on October 27, 2000 after sixteen years in office. Arnhim Ulric Eustace then became the new prime minister .

For his service in 1985 he was Privy Councilor and in 1995 as a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in the peerage collected and led since then the suffix "Sir".
