Controversy

Call for a boycott

In 2015 there were massive protests against Ismail Sabri based on a post he published on Facebook calling on Chinese companies that do not discriminate against Chinese entrepreneurs to boycott.

In response, political analyst Wan Saiful Wan Jan, chairman of the Institute for Democracy and the Economy, said that all Malaysian voters regardless of ethnicity would be outraged by Ismail's comment. Police Inspector General Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said he would open an investigation into the minister, after which Ismail Sabri deleted the mail.

Low Yat 2

In 2015 there was another controversy about Ismail Sabri when he proposed the construction of a mall for digital gadgets "Low Yat 2", which should only accommodate Malay traders. The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) criticized him heavily because the construction of the mall would only intensify conflicts between the ethnic groups. Im was also accused of being a racist . Even members of his own party criticized him, saying that a mall divided by ethnicity was not a good idea.

End of financial support from Taylor's University

On September 16, the bus company Wawasan Sutera, which also operates for Taylor's University , drove people in a bus with the university's logo to a racial rally without the university's permission. Two days later, the university ended its contract with the bus company Wawasan Sutera. Subsequently, Ismail Sabri announced that the government would end funding the university. This was perceived as a reaction to the termination of the contract, although he did not provide the reason for the suspension of the financial support.

A member of parliament, Teresa Kok, criticized the decision, calling it "a personal campaign of revenge and abuse of power". She called on the cabinet to reprimand Ismail Sabri and ask him to publish the reason for his decision. MCA Chairman Senator Chai Kim Sen said it was unbelievable and childish that the minister couldn't give a single reason for ending the funding. He also said Ismail Sabri was known for his racist remarks and that this decision would only strengthen his image as a racist.

Sea turtle eggs

On November 4, 2015, a photo of Ismail Sabri went viral, in which he was having dinner in a seafood restaurant. A plate with a dozen sea turtle eggs was recognized in the photo. Ismail denied the allegation that he had eaten them and referred to health reasons. On November 9, 2015, Ismail said he was not aware of a law prohibiting the consumption or possession of sea turtle eggs. On November 19, 2015, a new photo was released showing sea turtle eggs on the plates of some people who dined with them. Because of this, some non-governmental organizations called for an investigation against the guests and the restaurant. Ismail Sabri said he directed his lawyers to take legal action against people accused of eating the turtle eggs. However, his charges against the Daily Express were rejected by the Supreme Court. He reached an out-of-court settlement with the newspaper.

E-cigarette industry

On November 9, 2015, Ismail Sabri said he was a supporter of the e-cigarette industry. He says the Malaysian-dominated industry is a success story despite the health risks. He said he hoped the industry could expand globally. Many prominent doctors criticize Ismail Sabri's support for the industry. The Sultan of Johor Ibrahim Ismail joined this criticism and banned all e-cigarette products from January 1, 2016.

Comment before the 2018 elections
