In 1960, Isobel Margaret Thorpe married engineer Malcolm H. Varley. Varley got her first tattoo in 1986 at the age of 49 at a tattoo convention at Hammersmith Palais, London . ("During the convention, I was immediately struck by the beauty of many of the tattoos I saw, and amazed at the diversity of the people I met there, who seemed to come from all walks of life"). When her husband introduced her to a tattoo artist named Bill Cooke, Varley showed interest and got a small bird tattooed on him. Her favorite tattoo was of a family of tigers on her stomach.

According to Guinness, Varley had more than 200 designs tattooed in a ten-year period, covering about 93 percent of her body; There were also 49 piercings , 16 of them in the genital area. Since she worked as a waitress at first, she left her forearms, hands and legs untattoed. Later, these areas were also provided with tattoos. In 1997 she had her last tattoo. She reported that "the only areas that are not fully tattooed are my face, the soles of my feet, my ears and some areas on my hands." Since 2000 she has been called the "most tattooed senior citizen in the world". In 2010, the entry in the Guinness Book of Records followed . As a result, she appeared at congresses, in various television programs, etc. a. on the Italian television program Lo Show dei Record , as well as in magazines and newspapers around the world. Varley developed Alzheimer's disease and died on May 11, 2015. She left behind her husband Malcom and their son Stephen.
