Israel Herstein

Israel "Yitzchak" Nathan Herstein (born March 28, 1923 in Lublin , †  February 9, 1988 in Chicago ) was an American mathematician who mainly dealt with algebra .

Herstein's family moved to Canada in 1928, where he studied at the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto (Masters in 1946). In 1948 he received his doctorate from Indiana University under Max Zorn ("Divisor Algebras"). He then went to the University of Kansas , Ohio State University , the University of Chicago (1950, with Abraham Adrian Albert ), the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University , before becoming a professor in Chicago in 1962.

He is best known for his work on the theory of non-commutative rings. Herstein is also known for his algebra textbooks.
