The İstanbul Futbol Ligi was a regional soccer league in Istanbul , which was considered the most prestigious league in Turkey before the establishment of a national league.
history
The İstanbul Futbol Ligi originally Constantinople Football Association League was founded in 1903. The main roles were played by James Lafontaine, Henry Pears, Horace Armitage and Yani Vasilyadi. They gave the league the name "Constantinople Football League". Since the games usually took place on Sundays, the league was also called the Istanbul Sunday League . The first championship was played with four teams without second legs. All teams were initially provided by English, Greek or Armenian minorities. The champions of the first season were the “ Imogene ” crew of the British embassy. The trophy was a shield that was made in England. It went from master to master as a hiking trophy and the names of the master teams were engraved. The team that had won the trophy most often over ten years was allowed to keep it.
In the 1906/1907 season, a Turkish team played for the first time, the forerunner of the Galatasaray team . Two years later, Galatasaray won the İstanbul Futbol Ligi championship for the first time. Gradually, more Turkish teams from Istanbul were added. Fenerbahçe and Altınordu were among them . The first Balkan War followed . For this reason, the championship was not fully played out. In the 1914/1915 season there were two competing leagues in Istanbul, each won by Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. The entry of the Ottoman Empire into World War I had a negative impact on the league. After 1915 the so-called İstanbul Cuma Ligi (Friday League) was established in Istanbul .
After the Turkish War of Independence , league operations were resumed. In the first season they played according to the knockout system . This amateur league existed until 1951. In 1952, the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi was created , which lasted until the nationwide Süper Lig was founded.
