history

The church Chiesa di San Salvatore in the town center

The place was first documented on October 9, 862 in Lucca , when Ildebrando figlio del fu Heriprando conte di Marittima , an Aldobrandeschi , exchanged owners with the Archdiocese of Lucca . The name Istia means Isola (Italian for island). In the 12th and 13th centuries, Istia was under the control of the bishops of Grosseto, who held the rule until Grosseto was conquered by Siena . In the 15th century, the Piccolomini family from Senese took over the management of Istia. After the Senese defeat against Florence in 1555, the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . In 1561 criminal jurisdiction was transferred to Grosseto, but civil jurisdiction remained in Istia. With the territorial reform of Pietro Leopoldo in 1783, Istia d'Ombrone became part of Grosseto.
