István Grencsó

István Grencsó (born May 9, 1956 in Nyíregyháza ) is a Hungarian jazz musician . In addition to his main instrument, the saxophone , he plays a number of other wind instruments such as flute , clarinet , tárogató , horn and duduk .

Life

Grencsó first played drums in his school days and then took flute lessons at a music school . At the end of the 1970s he met Mihály Dresch and was taught the saxophone by him. He was influenced by the music of Jiří Stivín and the Polish musicians Tomasz Stańko and Tomasz Szukalski . He began his public work in 1979 as a flautist in the group Masina Jazz Csoport . He became better known when he was a partner of the pianist György Szabados in the 1980s. In 1984 he founded the group Grencsó Kollektíva with Róbert Benkő ( cello and bass ) and György Jeszenszky (drums) , with which he has recorded a number of albums with changing line- ups . He also founded the István Grencsó Quartet. In 2007 he became a member of the Dutch-Hungarian formation Double Grounds , a line-up with two saxophones, two trombones , two basses and two drums.

Grencsó worked with Peter Brötzmann , Tobias Delius , Peter Kowald , Irén Lovász , Paul Termos and the Russian Noiz Orchestra , among others .

His music is mostly in the field of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger for jazz ensembles, he also worked in the field of film and stage music .
