biography

Árnyékrajzoló

After studying graphic design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest , which he graduated in 1975, he began to occupy himself with stage design and animation . Since 1975 he has also worked as a film director. Later, when his interest turned to posters , he initially mainly designed posters for theater performances, film theaters, and exhibitions. He then played an active role with several political posters during the political change in Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s. His posters, illustrations and art prints have brought István Orosz a worldwide reputation. He deals with the possibilities of perspective representation and shows the visual paradox with an illusionistic approach . He takes up the topic of anamorphosis and impresses the audience with his outstanding, innovative works of art. He follows the best traditions of printing techniques, uses woodcuts and etching. He regularly takes part in the most important international poster and graphic arts biennials. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in renowned museums and galleries abroad such as in Hungary and has taken part in hundreds of group exhibitions with his works.

István Orosz also uses the Greek ΟΥΤΙΣ Utisz as an artist name. This was the name Homer's hero , Odysseus , gave the Cyclops when he asked "Who are you?" “Utisz”, which means “nobody”, was the deceptive answer. Odysseus then blinded the Cyclops, whose only eye burned out. Like Odysseus' deed, a poster is an attack on the eye - says the artist.
