István Türr

István Türr (German also Stephan Türr ; born August 11, 1825 in Baja , † May 3, 1908 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian insurgent, engineer and politician.

Life

As a lieutenant, Türr joined a Hungarian grenadier regiment stationed in Italy in 1848 and defected to the Piedmontese in January 1849 , organized a Hungarian legion, and after the Battle of Novara in 1849 fought on the side of the rebels in Baden . He entered British service in 1854, was arrested in 1855 while on a trip to buy horses in Pest , but released again. In 1859 he fought against the Austrians as captain of the alpine hunters under Giuseppe Garibaldi . 1860 in Sicily and Naples , here he achieved the rank of divisional general after having contributed much to its unification with Italy as governor of Naples .

In 1866 he prepared an uprising in Hungary from Serbia . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867, however, he returned to Hungary, where he lived, working on the design of canals and industrial enterprises. Occasionally he took part in politics as a negotiator between Austria, Italy and France (for example in the negotiations on a possible alliance from 1869 to 1870). From 1881 he directed the construction of the canal over the Isthmus of Corinth .

In September 1896, Türr headed the World Peace Congress in Budapest.
