background

When Craig Brewer wrote the script for Hustle & Flow , Hollywood studio bosses suggested West Coast rap artists. But he had dirty south rap on his mind. Only when he won John Singleton as producer could this be implemented. Singleton won Three 6 Mafia to write the soundtrack. It's hard out here for a pimp was created here. The song and film were a major breakthrough for Dirty South hip hop. It was also the first time a hip-hop group won an Oscar and only the second hip-hop song to win an Oscar after Eminem's Lose Yourself from 8 Mile .

reception

The 2006 Oscar win was considered a big surprise. Sometimes it is criticized that the movie songs from Brokeback Mountain were unjustifiably not nominated. It was criticized in terms of content that this Academy Awards once again portrayed African Americans as "ignorant, hypersexual, subservient, or criminal". Rolando Rodriguez wrote for the Houston Press that It's Hard out Here for a Pimp was his choice to musically define the first decade of the 21st century.
