It Could Happen to You is a composition by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Burke from 1944. The song was written for the film and music comedy And the Angels Sing and later developed into a jazz standard .

The 32-bar song, mostly in major , is written in the ABAB ' form and is usually interpreted at a moderate tempo.

The title became popular in 1944 through the version by Jo Stafford (on Capitol Records , which came to number 10 in the American charts). A recording by Bing Crosby from the same year made it to 18th place.

In 1956, accordionist Mat Mathews went into the studio to do a cover version with Art Farmer , Dave Amram and Herbie Mann . A jazz standard was It Could Happen to You by the received in the same year version of Miles Davis for his Prestige album Relaxin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet . In 1957 Sonny Rollins recorded an unaccompanied version.
