Ivan Devčić (born September 1, 1948 in Krasno , Lika region , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Rijeka .

Life

After attending schools in Krasno, Rijeka and Pazin , he graduated from high school in 1967 in Pazin. Devčić studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in Rijeka and at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe and the Pontifical Gregorian University until 1974 . He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1975 by Archbishop Josip Pavlišic for the Archdiocese of Rijeka-Senj . In 1976 he obtained his master's degree in philosophy at the Gregorian and in 1980 he was awarded a thesis in philosophy with the thesis “Personalism with Nikolaj A. Berdjajew. Attempt at a philosophy of the concrete " doctorate . After his return from Rome, Devčić intensified his scientific activities. Devčić also teaches philosophy in Rijeka to this day.

Pope John Paul II appointed Ivan Devčić Archbishop of Rijeka on November 17, 2000. He was consecrated as a bishop by the Archbishop of Zagreb , Josip Bozanić , on December 16, 2000. Co- consecrators were Mile Bogović , Bishop of Gospić-Senj , and Ivan Milovan , Bishop of Poreč-Pula . In the Croatian Bishops' Conference , Archbishop Ivan Devčić is President of the Board of Directors for Catholic Schools and Universities in the Republic of Croatia .
