Ivan Gudelj (born September 21, 1960 in Imotski , SFR Yugoslavia , today Croatia ) is a Croatian soccer coach and former Yugoslav soccer player .
Career as a player
In 1975 Gudelj came from his youth club NK Mračaj Runovići to Hajduk Split , where he was used as a youth in the first Yugoslav league. After winning the title in 1979 he became a regular player and won the Yugoslav Cup in 1984. In the 1983/84 UEFA Cup he reached the semifinals.
Gudelj took part with Yugoslavia in the Junior World Cup in 1979 and a year later reached fourth place at the football tournament of the Olympic Games in Moscow .
Later took part in the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , was used in all three preliminary round games and scored a goal. Two years later at the European Football Championship in France in 1984 , he was eliminated with Yugoslavia in the group stage, where he was used three times again. At the 1982 World Cup, the editors of the French sports newspaper L'Équipe elected him to the all-star team . In total, he played 33 times for Yugoslavia and scored three goals.
He had to end his career because of hepatitis B illness. Before his illness he received an offer from the French club Girondins Bordeaux , which he could not accept. In 1982 he was Yugoslavia's footballer of the year .
Career as a coach
Gudelj trained various teams in Croatia . He coached the Croatian U-16 team , where players like Niko Kranjčar played. He also trained in Uskok, Zadar and Dubrovnik. For a short time he was the coach of Vorwärts Steyr in Austria . Gudelj coached his first big club from 2005 to 2006 when he coached his regular club Hajduk Split.
