Ivo Opstelten
Ivo Willem Opstelten (born January 31, 1944 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch politician . Opstelten was Minister for Security and Justice of the Netherlands in the Rutte II Cabinet from November 5, 2012 to March 9, 2015 .
From 1999 to 2009 Opstelten was mayor of the city of Rotterdam . From 2008 to 2010 he served as chairman of the right-wing liberal party Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) and from 2010 to 2012 he was Minister for Security and Justice in the Rutte I cabinet .
Life
Opstelten was born the son of a banker. After attending the Lyceum in Emmen , Opstelten studied law at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden until 1969 with a focus on constitutional law and public law .
After two years as a bailiff in the municipality of Vlaardingen, he was elected mayor of the Drentschen municipality of Dalen in 1972 . In 1977 he moved to the municipality of Doorn in the same position and in 1980 as mayor of Delfzijl . From 1987 to 1992 he was Ministerial Director for Public Order and Security in the Dutch Ministry of the Interior.
On November 1, 1992, Opstelten returned to local politics and became mayor of the city of Utrecht . From February 16, 1999 to January 1, 2009 he was mayor of his native Rotterdam.
After serving as deputy chairman of his party VVD from 1986 to May 1993, he was elected to the office of party chairman on May 31, 2008 as the successor to the resigned Jan van Zanen .
Resignation as Minister of Justice
On the evening of March 9, 2015, Opstelten resigned as minister. He had misinformed parliament about the payment of 2 million euros to a drug lord in 2001. "The State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Fred Teeven, also announced his resignation. In 2001, he was responsible for the deal as prosecutor in Amsterdam."
