Ivan Oleksijowytsch Altschewskyj , also Iwan Altschewsky , in France as Jean Altschewsky (* December 15 July / December 27,  1876 greg. In Charkow , Charkow Governorate , Russian Empire ; † April 27 July / May 10,  1917 greg. In Baku ) was a Ukrainian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Ivan Altschewskyj was born in Kharkiv as the son of the pedagogue Chrystyna Altschewska (1841–1920) and the industrialist and banker Oleksij Altschewskyj . Until the spring of 1901 he studied at the Natural Science Institute for Physics and Mathematics at Kharkov University .

After the death of his father, he went to Saint Petersburg to support his family financially and began his career as an opera singer in the Mariinsky Theater , where he appeared as a soloist until 1905.

In the summer of 1902 he went to Paris to take lessons from Jean de Reszke and to learn from other singers. In 1905 he sang "La Monnaie" in Brussels .

Ivan Altschewskyj was also a soloist at the Paris Opéra Garnier between 1908 and 1910 and at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow from 1910 to 1914 and performed at the opera houses in Odessa , Yekaterinoslav , Charkow, Baku, as well as in Western European and American cities.

On an opera tour to Baku, after a few appearances, he had to be admitted to the local psychiatric clinic, where he died. His body was then transported by train to Kharkiv for burial.
