Chrystyna Alchevska
Chrystyna Danyliwna Altschewska ( Ukrainian Христина Данилівна Алчевська , Russian Христина Даниловна Алчевская Christina Danilovna Altschewskaja ; born March 4 jul. / 16th March 1841 greg. In Borzna , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 15. August 1920 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) was a prominent Ukrainian educator and organizer of Sunday schools.
Life
Chrystyna Altschewska was born as Chrystyna Danyliwna Schurawljowa in Borsna in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernihiv . Her father taught at the municipal school in Borsna and her mother was the daughter of a hero of the war of 1812 , General Nikolai Wuitsch ( Николай Васильевич Вуич ). After her wedding, she lived and worked in Kharkiv. There she founded the Kharkiv Women's Sunday School at her own expense in 1862 , which was officially accredited in 1870. Sunday Schools were private educational institutions for minors and adults who were unable to attend regular schools because of their work. The school she founded was known for its highly developed methods of adult education . For example, Borys Hrinchenko taught at the school as a young academic. In the 57 years of its existence, the school has taught more than 17,000 people.
In 1896 Altschewska had a school building worth 50,000 rubles built and at her instigation, the sculptor Vladimir Beklemischew erected the world's first monument with a bust of Taras Shevchenko in Kharkiv in 1899 .
Altschewska compiled a three-volume methodological and bibliographical guide, Tschto tschytat narodu ? , in collaboration with the teachers at her school between 1884 and 1906 . ( Что читать народу?, In English What people should read ), which was awarded the main prize at the Paris International Exhibition in 1889. In addition, she created a textbook " Книги взрослых " (in German book for adults ) in 1899/1900 and wrote her memoirs, Peredumnoe i perezhitoe (in German My thoughts and experiences ) as well as a large number of methodological articles on adult education in 1912 .
family
Chrystyna Altschewska married in 1862 the rich Ukrainian mining engineer, industrialist, banker and philanthropist Oleksij Altschewskyj (1835-1901). She was the mother of the composer Hryhorij Altschewskyj (1866-1920), the opera singer Ivan Altschewskyj (1876-1917) and the poet Chrystja Altschewska (1882-1931).
