The building with today's address Nikolaistraße 51 and the grounds of the Jägerhof belonged to the St. Claren Monastery, built in 1301 . The first building at this point was made largely of wood ; the roof was of straw or reeds covered. A stone building followed, which was first mentioned in a document in 1450. The building was used by the monastery as a cattle yard and as a residential building for the servants . There were several small chambers on the upper floors and a larger room as a kitchen and servants' room on the ground floor.

In the course of the Reformation, the Catholic monastery was closed and came into the possession of the elector . From 1606 to 1705 there were seven changes of ownership. The new owner in 1705, Duke Johann Georg zu Sachsen-Weißenfels , had the building converted into a hunting and forestry yard and the seat of the chief hunter. The inauguration after the renovation took place on February 26, 1705. During the 31st birthday party of Duke Christian on February 23, 1713, Johann Sebastian Bach played the hunting cantata What I like is just the lively hunt . When French troops marched through Weissenfels during the Wars of Liberation in 1813, Marshal Michel Ney stayed in the building from April 29th to 30th.

From 1829 until the new provincial deaf and dumb institute was built in Langendorfer Strasse in 1898, the deaf and dumb institute of the teachers' college was housed here under the direction of Moritz Hill . The building also served the director of the teachers' college Wilhelm Harnisch as a residence from 1837 to 1842.

This was followed by the establishment of a preparatory institute that prepares students for attending the teachers' seminar. The later directors of the teachers 'college continued to have their official apartments here until the new building of the teachers' college was completed in 1908. After the First and Second World Wars, the building was rented out. After reunification , the house was initially empty and was in a poor structural condition. Today the Ringhotel Jägerhof with an attached restaurant is located in the building . In 2017 there was a renovation with a fundamental renovation.

architecture

In the 18th century, when it was converted into a ducal forester's house, it was converted to Baroque style . Remains of a seating niche portal can be seen at the main entrance. The house is also characterized by six staggered dormers , elaborate window profiles and a semicircular extension in front of the west gable with a quarry stone ground floor.
