Jógvan Poulsen (born February 19, 1854 in Svínáir on Eysturoy , Faroe Islands , † January 21, 1941 in Strendur ) was a Faroese educator, author and politician of the Sambandsflokkurin .

Jógvan Poulsen was the son of Birgithe Thomasdatter from Funningur and Poul Joensen from Eiði . He was married to Sigga Catrina Sofía Petersen from Hósvík .

In 1874 he came to the teachers' college in Tórshavn , from where he graduated in 1876. He then became a teacher in Strendur , Skáli , Selatrað and Morskranes until he left the service in 1917.

Together with Chr.L. Johannesen he wrote the first Faroese school book Förisk ABC und lesingabók , which the Føringafelag published in 1891. The book was not used much because the grammar of the Faroese language was changed a short time later and it was overshadowed by AC Evensen's reading books .

Poulsen was best known for his biblical story Bíbliusøga from 1900. It is regarded as a milestone in Faroese literary history as it was the first religious book in a language in which there was no translation of the Bible at that time. It was also written according to the new grammatical rules.

1883-1928 Poulsen sat as a member of parliament for the unionist in Løgting , from 1906 for the unionist Sambandsflokkurin , of which he was a co-founder.

1898–1903 and 1906–1912 he sat on the board of the Føroya Lærarafelag (Faroese Teachers' Association), and from 1924–28 he was a member of the Føroya skúlastjorn , the school authority of the Faroe Islands.

Poulsen was also councilor in the Sjóvar kommuna , temporarily as mayor.

On May 19, 2008 Jógvan Poulsen is honored on a postage stamp from Postverk Føroya .
