Life

After studying in Kremenez , Józef Wysocki joined the army of the Russian- ruled Congress Poland in 1828 , became second lieutenant in the artillery and fought under General Skrzynecki during the November uprising in 1830 . During this time Wysocki received the highest Polish war award, the Virtuti Militari Cross .

After the rebellion was put down, he emigrated to France and turned to military science . Wysocki completed his officer training in Metz .

When revolutions broke out across Europe in 1848 , Wysocki left France and assembled a Polish legion in Krakow . In November he moved with his troops across the Carpathian Mountains to Hungary and supported the rebels there during the Hungarian struggle for freedom , initially under General Damjanich . After the first battle at Komorn (April 26, 1849) Wysocki was appointed general. In 1853 he returned to France.

Ten years later, for the January uprising of the Poles against the division of Russia , Wysocki once again put together a 4,000-strong force in Volhynia. However, his enterprise lacked support from the rural population.
