József Zachar

József Zachar (born October 27, 1943 in Csepel near Budapest , † December 9, 2009 in Budapest) was a Hungarian historian, Colonel i. R. Zachar and has been Professor of Modern History in Eger (Hungary) and President of the National Commission of Hungarian Military Historians since 2002 .

Life

From 1961 to 1966 Zachar studied history and German at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest . From 1967 he worked as a teacher at the military college " Lajos Kossuth ", where he was appointed senior teacher for military history in 1974.

From 1975 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute and Museum of Military History and in 1977 acquired the academic degree of Candidate in Science (C.Sc.). In 1983 he joined the Hungarian armed forces and was also the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Hadtörténelmi Közlemények" ( Military History Communications ). Between 1986 and 1995 he was head of the permanent Hungarian archive delegation in the Austrian War Archives . Upon his return home, he was promoted to colonel and appointed scientific deputy director general of the Institute and Museum of Military History in Budapest . He held this position until his retirement in 1999.

Between 2000 and 2003 he was deputy head of department at the Institute for Advanced Training and Research in Security at the University of Police (Budapest). He completed his habilitation in 2001 and was appointed full professor by the Hungarian President the following year . Until his death he worked at the Károly Eszterházy University in Eger (Hungary) .

His field of research was the military history of Hungary, with a focus on the 18th and 19th centuries. He has authored twenty independent volumes and participated in scientific conferences.

He was married and had two sons: Péter Krisztián Zachar (* 1976) is also a historian and university professor, Viktor Kristóf Zachar (* 1980) is a translator, interpreter and university assistant.
