Jörg Balke

Jörg Balke (born March 23, 1936 in Berlin - Spandau ; † March 5, 2012 in Unna ) was a German athlete who took part in the 1960 Olympic Games.

Jörg Balke started for the police SV Berlin ; He won his first German championship title in 1959 when he won the 3 x 1000 meter relay together with Hans-Joachim Kowalewski and Klaus-Jürgen Lehmann. In 1960 he finished second behind Paul Schmidt in the 800-meter run , and in the relay he defended the title together with Gerhard Weinmann and Klaus-Jürgen Lehmann. His 800 meter best time of 1: 47.1 minutes was set by Balke on August 7, 1960 in Erfurt when qualifying for the all-German team ; at the Olympic Games in Rome he reached the semifinals over 800 meters.

In 1962 with Kowalewski and Lehmann and in 1963 with Peter Christ and Lehmann, Balke won two more titles with the 3 x 1000 meter relay. In the hall, Balke won over 800 meters in 1962, 1964 and 1967; In 1961 he won the season title in the hall together with Weinmann and Lehmann. Between 1960 and 1966, Balke competed in 20 international matches for Germany or the Federal Republic of Germany; at the European Indoor Games in 1967 Balke was eliminated over 800 meters in the lead. As a state amateur, Balke trained mainly while he was on duty. His training was geared towards interval training . During his playing days he was 1.77 m tall and weighed 68 kg.

Balke was a police officer by profession; in the 1990s he and his wife worked as a doping investigator. Balke was married to the 800 meter runner Rosemarie Klute, their daughter Tina married the hurdler Olaf Hense .
