from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg RJ Schirra (born August 3, 1960 in Illingen , Saarland ), is a German philosopher and computer scientist and co-founder of the engineering course in computer visualistics at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . His research areas are in the field of artificial intelligence , cognitive science , computer visualistics and image science .

Life

From 1979 Jörg RJ Schirra studied computer science with a minor in physics at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . He graduated in 1986 in the field of AI under Wolfgang Wahlster . In addition, he devoted himself intensively to philosophical studies during his studies (especially with Kuno Lorenz and Arno Ros ). He also dealt with psychology , linguistics and anthropology .

After a brief activity at the University of Bremen , Jörg RJ Schirra received his doctorate in 1994 at the Technical Faculty of the University of Saarland in the field of image and language-understanding systems - also under the supervision of Wolfgang Wahlster . The dissertation is entitled: Image description as a connection between visual and linguistic space - an interdisciplinary investigation of image ideas in a listener model .

After a postdoctoral research stay at the International Computer Science Institute at the University of California, Berkeley in 1994/95 , he took up an assistant position at the Institute for Simulation and Graphics (Faculty of Computer Science) at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in early 1996 . There, together with Thomas Strothotte, he was significantly involved in the development and introduction of the new engineering degree course in computer visualistics . Between 1996 and 2003 he held the position of subject supervisor and was thus primarily responsible for the content and organization of the diploma course during this time. In addition, he supervised the Magdeburg interdisciplinary image science colloquium and, in the winter semester 1999/2000, introduced a university IT course on technical and social aspects of computer games nationwide for the first time with a colleague.

In 2005 he completed his habilitation in Magdeburg with the Foundation of Computational Visualistics .

Jörg RJ Schirra has been a freelance scientist with teaching authorization at Magdeburg University and teaching assignments at various universities since 2003 . His philosophical and visual studies work is closely related to the work of Klaus Sachs-Hombach , with whom Schirra has also published the magazine IMAGE since 2005.

Focus of work

Schirra's scientific work is sometimes more philosophically reflective than is often the case with computer scientists. In many of his writings it is about the question of which problem it is actually that computer science has set itself to solve in a certain area, and with which means such a solution can reasonably be achieved. Because many of these problems relate to the practical life context of people and can therefore only be adequately dealt with against an appropriate human and human sciences background - a "technocratic" approach that aims to solve the problems in a purely technical way can only go too short. In this context, his argumentation-theoretical analysis of the connection between applied computer science and the respective field of application is particularly important, with the help of which he can, for example, more precisely characterize the relationship between computer visualistics and image science .

His work on the philosophy of the image is also worth mentioning. Philosophically, he is particularly close to Arno Ros .
