Jörg Weissig

Jörg Weissig (* 1929 / 1930 ; † October 2017 ) was a German rowing coach .

Life

Weissig studied at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig and graduated in 1954. The topic of his work was "The training of tax people for training and competition".

Weissig was a trainer at SC DHfK Leipzig . His first major success as a rowing coach was in 1967 when his protégés Werner Riemann, Hans-Jürgen Friedrich and Manfred Wotzniak won silver at the European Championships. In 1972 the rowers Siegfried Brietzke and Wolfgang Mager , whom he supervised, became Olympic champions in two without a helmsman . At the Summer Olympics, Weissig's foursome with Brietzke, Mager, Andreas Decker and Stefan Semmler won the gold medal. In 1980 this boat managed by Weissig won again, but instead of Mager, Jürgen Thiele was part of the crew in Moscow . The eighth Olympic champions Roland Kostulski , Bernd Baumgart , Jens Doberschütz and Hans-Peter Koppe as well as vice world champion Uwe Gasch were among his protégés.

After the end of the German Democratic Republic , Weissig, nicknamed “Schorsch” in rowing circles, worked as a national coach in Belgium .
