Jörg Wengler (born July 5, 1967 in Elsterwerda ) is a German chess player . He is an international master in correspondence chess and head of the chess department at FC Bayern Munich .

Life

Jörg Wengler studied mathematics at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and financial mathematics at Victoria University of Wellington . He works in the insurance industry and has been with the auditing company KPMG in Munich since 2017 .

Wengler was part of the FC Bayern Munich team that competed in the 1999 Sat.1 program About Laughs the World in the simultaneous competition against Hape Kerkeling, who pretended to be the Iranian grandmaster and was prompted by Elisabeth Pähtz .

Correspondence chess

Since 2003 he has held the title of International Master in Correspondence Chess. He achieved the standards for this at a standards tournament in Section 39, which was held from 1997 to 2002 and in which he took third place, as well as at a standards tournament in Section 97, which began in 2001. At this tournament he was also third. His Elo rating in correspondence chess is 2384, which is also his highest Elo rating in correspondence chess. Since 2005 he is no longer an active correspondence chess player.

Jörg Wengler played in the 2nd Bundesliga , the Oberliga and other leagues for the chess department of FC Bayern Munich . He has been the team captain of the first team in the Bundesliga since the 2015/16 season . He regularly takes part in the open international Bavarian championship in Bad Wiessee . Here he managed to draw games against grandmasters Eduardas Rozentalis (1999), Ulf Andersson (2011) and Andreï Sokolov (2012). His Elo rating in local chess is 2061 as of August 2019, his highest to date was 2134 from February 2016 to November 2016.

Chess organizer

Jörg Wengler has been Head of the Chess Department at FC Bayern Munich since 2015, succeeding Günter Schütz. He has been chairman of the Munich chess district since 2017. In 2018 he was the organizer of the Munich individual championship.
