history

Jews have probably settled in Kaisersesch since the middle of the 19th century. In the 1930s, Düngenheim , Hambuch , Illerich and Müllenbach also belonged to the Kaisersesch synagogue community . The size of the Jewish community was 31 in 1885, 29 in 1925, 50 in 1932 and 27 in 1939. It is not known when the local synagogue was occupied. In 1938 the prayer house was devastated and later converted into a residential building. The community's dead were first buried in the Jewish cemetery in Binningen . In 1920 the Jewish community of Kaisersesch applied to have its own burial site. For this purpose, a 9.74 acres of land was acquired in corridor 11 No. 559 . The cemetery was occupied from 1920 to 1942 and today there are still 18 gravestones (mazewot) in two rows of nine each, some of which are located on multiple graves .

The cemetery was desecrated several times during the National Socialist era and thereafter, most recently in 1994. In November 2011, almost half of the tombstones fell over and were partly broken next to the grave sites. The cause of the damage is unclear. The damage was taken as an opportunity by the Kaisersesch community to thoroughly renovate the grave complex in spring 2012.
